The Sunday School holds a monthly Outreach Project on the second Sunday of each month. These projects give the children an opportunity to learn about the needs of others and directly participate in creating change and bringing joy to others. The Outreach Committee also hosts ‘all ages’ hands-on projects throughout the year for everyone to roll up their sleeves and lend a helping hand. Check out the calendar for upcoming Outreach Dates for this year!
Hands-On Outreach Projects include:
Everyone is invited to attend this multi-generational day of service. We will meet at the church in the morning for a brief time of sharing and prayer then head out to an assortment of service project locations for the day. At the end of the service times we will meet back at the church reflect on the day and share a meal together.

Making “Birthday in a Bag” satchels to drop off at Holy Family and PADS. These bags include cake mixes, frosting, birthday cards, party favors, candles and party napkins – a one-stop birthday party for those who may not otherwise get to celebrate in this special way.
Collecting and preparing food, toiletries, treats and personal items for the Any Soldier Project. The children write personal notes and greetings which are sent to an adopted platoon deployed overseas. The sorting and shpment occurs each year in November near Veteran’s Day. Look for the collection bins and signs in late October.
Participating in Musical Ministry when the children sing at the Westmoreland Senior Facility during the Christmas season, brightening the days of those who aren’t able to get out to see the beautiful faces of children singing.
Preparing lunches once a month for the homeless residents at the PADS Shelter by making sandwiches, baggingup the lunches and getting them ready for distribution.
Collecting shoes for Soles4Souls and participating in cleaning, re-lacing and preparing the shoes for shipping. Soles4Souls is a global not-for-profit institution dedicated to fighting the devastating impact and perpetuation of poverty. The organization collects new and used shoes then distributes those shoes and clothes both via direct donations to people in need and by provisioning qualified micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantagedcommunities. The Union Church goes to Bernie’s Book Bank to process, sort, sticker, and package books in need of homes to go to kids who need books in their homes. To find out more about Bernie’s; click here: http://www.berniesbookbank.org. Bernie’s Book Bank is the logistical bridge between where books are today, and are no longer being used, to where they are not, but are desperately needed. We do three things exceptionally well: we collect hundreds of thousands of new and gently used books; we process them into collections of six age-appropriate and leveled books; and we deliver them directly into the hands of low-income children who have none of their own. We collect books two times each year, first to take with us to Bernie’s on the day we volunteer and again during the Christmas season to bring holiday joy.
Project Linus fleece blanket making. We gather together in the fellowship hall to make no sew fleece blankets for Project Linus Read more about Linus here: http://www.projectlinus.org/about/ The mission of Project Linus is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”
Outreach puts together New Mother Baby Gift Bags to go to local hospitals, which are given by the nursing staff to mothers who may need a little extra help getting settled with a newborn. The bags contain everything from diapers, to one-zies, from formula & toys to teething rings & wipes to soaps & shampoo.
Everyone is invited to attend this all church, all ages, outreach project. We will meet at the Feed My Starving Children Warehouse in Libertyville, to package and prepare for shipment nutritious ready to cook, meals for children and families all over the world. What a better way to spend time together as a church family than to feed others. Look for sign up sheets on the office door in mid January, space is limited to the first 30 volunteers who sign up. The Outreach Committee is making a donation to FMSC on each and every volunteers behalf to cover the cost of food and shipping.
